Malay Tone Poem

Alec Dankworth needs little introduction to jazz audiences in the UK. One of the great bass players in contemporary jazz, he brings his brand new group, ‘World Spirit’, to the club for what promises to be a great evening. Alec has played with some of the biggest names in jazz - he was in Dave Brubeck’s quartet, has played with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Abdullah Ibrahim, Julian Joseph, as well as playing with Van Morrison and Ginger Baker, and of course Cleo Laine and John Dankworth.

His latest project, World Spirit has developed out of Alec’s love of music from the Iberian peninsula, but also crosses the Straights of Gibraltar into Africa and beyond. The group features Emily Dankworth, leading tenorist Brandon Allen and percussionist/drummer extraordinaire, Asaf Sirkis, to explore melodies from Africa, South America and other continents from a jazz perspective.

With tunes by Duke Ellington, Bela Flek, Antonio-Carlos Jobim, Abdullah Ibrahim and WC Handy originating from Ireland, Venezuela, Bulgaria, South Africa, Mali and Brazil, World Spirit offers an incredible evening of global song and improvisation.
